In 2022, overseas shipments of lead-acid accumulators for starting piston engines decreased by -1.8% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, starter battery exports amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

India represented the main exporting country with an export of about X units, which amounted to 77% of total exports. Pakistan (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Bangladesh (X units). All these countries together held approx. 23% share of total exports.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lead-acid accumulators for starting piston engines exports, with a CAGR of +20.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Pakistan (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Bangladesh experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of India (+35 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Pakistan (-14 p.p.) and Bangladesh (-20.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In India, starter battery exports expanded at an average annual rate of +20.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Pakistan (+3.8% per year) and Bangladesh (-1.4% per year).

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per unit, surging by 3.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per unit), while Pakistan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of lead-acid accumulators for starting piston engines, when their volume decreased by -11.8% to X units. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +49.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 40%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, starter battery imports shrank to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +9.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

India was the key importer of lead-acid accumulators for starting piston engines in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was approx. 61% of total imports in 2022. Afghanistan (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 20% share, followed by Nepal (7.4%) and Sri Lanka (6.8%). Bangladesh (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lead-acid accumulators for starting piston engines imports, with a CAGR of +10.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Afghanistan (+5.8%), Bangladesh (+5.4%) and Nepal (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Sri Lanka (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+17 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Afghanistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka saw its share reduced by -2.4%, -4.3% and -11% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest starter battery importing markets in Southern Asia were India ($X), Afghanistan ($X) and Nepal ($X), with a combined 83% share of total imports.

India, with a CAGR of +15.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2022, surging by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nepal ($X per unit), while India ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
