Exports by Country
India (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) dominates exports structure, together creating 89% of total exports. Pakistan (X tons) took a 5.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Nepal (4.6%).
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +1.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest bovine and equine leather supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Pakistan, with a 20% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in India amounted to -6.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bangladesh (-6.0% per year) and Pakistan (-6.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -23.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 9.4%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Southern Asia
After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of leather of bovine and equine animals increased by 14% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 40%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, bovine and equine leather imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -20.3% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 35%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
India represented the major importer of leather of bovine and equine animals in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 78% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Bangladesh (X tons), making up an 18% share of total imports.
Imports into India increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bangladesh (+17.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +17.1% from 2012-2021. While the share of Bangladesh (+9.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of India (-6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported leather of bovine and equine animals in Southern Asia, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 32% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India was relatively modest.
