Leek Market Size in Southern Asia

In 2022, the South Asian leek market increased by 10% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, consumption enjoyed a modest increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Leek Production in Southern Asia

In value terms, leek production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 53%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Sri Lanka (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of leek production, comprising approx. 71% of total volume. Moreover, leek production in Sri Lanka exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Pakistan (X tons), with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Sri Lanka amounted to +1.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+97.0% per year) and Pakistan (+2.1% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in Southern Asia skyrocketed to X tons per ha, growing by 21% on the previous year's figure. The yield indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by 25%. Exports in Southern Asia

After three years of decline, shipments abroad of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables increased by 54% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 202%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leek exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 363% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Bangladesh (X tons), India (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons), together accounting for 86% of total export. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), committing a 9.7% share of total exports. Sri Lanka (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +30.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) emerged as the largest leek supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by India, with a 10% share.

In Bangladesh, leek exports plunged by an average annual rate of -12.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sri Lanka (-24.5% per year) and India (+6.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Export price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, leek export price decreased by -36.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 54%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, approx. X tons of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables were imported in Southern Asia; which is down by -3.8% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 195%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, leek imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a mild increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 74%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Afghanistan dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 96% of total imports in 2022. Sri Lanka (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to leek imports into Afghanistan stood at +21.0%. At the same time, Sri Lanka (+34.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sri Lanka emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +34.1% from 2012-2022. Afghanistan (+44 p.p.) and Sri Lanka (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Afghanistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in Southern Asia, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 6.3% share of total imports.
