India (X tons) remains the largest lemon and lime producing country in Southern Asia, accounting for 94% of total volume. It was followed by Pakistan (X tons), with a 2.2% share of total production. The third position in this ranking was held by Bangladesh (X tons), with a 1.8% share.

In India, lemon and lime production expanded at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (-0.2% per year) and Bangladesh (+1.0% per year).

The average lemon and lime yield expanded sharply to X tons per ha in 2022, increasing by 7.7% compared with the year before. In general, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the lemon and lime yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in Southern Asia

Lemon and lime exports reduced remarkably to X tons in 2022, waning by -34.8% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 65%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lemon and lime exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 58% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

India dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Pakistan (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) - each recorded a 7.8% share of total exports.

Exports from India decreased at an average annual rate of -5.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bangladesh (+20.1%) and Pakistan (+8.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +20.1% from 2012-2022. Bangladesh (+3.4 p.p.) and Pakistan (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while India saw its share reduced by -5.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest lemon and lime supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

In India, lemon and lime exports decreased by an average annual rate of -2.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bangladesh (+14.7% per year) and Pakistan (+0.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 28%. Imports in Southern Asia

Lemon and lime imports shrank to X tons in 2022, dropping by -11.2% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, lemon and lime imports declined sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 146%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Nepal dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 76% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Afghanistan (X tons) and Maldives (X tons), together creating a 20% share of total imports. India (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Nepal increased at an average annual rate of +14.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, India (+33.8%), Afghanistan (+20.4%) and Maldives (+17.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +33.8% from 2012-2022. While the share of Afghanistan (+3.7 p.p.), India (+1.7 p.p.) and Maldives (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nepal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lemons and limes in Southern Asia, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Maldives ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Afghanistan, with a 9.5% share.

In Nepal, lemon and lime imports increased at an average annual rate of +24.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Maldives (+18.9% per year) and Afghanistan (+15.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -5.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, posted a prominent expansion.
