In 2022, the South Asian lentil market decreased by -3.7% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Lentil exports skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, increasing by 254% on the previous year. Overall, exports saw a strong increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

India prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2022. Afghanistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 6.4% share, followed by Nepal (4.8%). Sri Lanka (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest lentil supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nepal ($X), with a 5.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Afghanistan, with a 4.1% share.

In India, lentil exports increased at an average annual rate of +55.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nepal (-20.0% per year) and Afghanistan (+15.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 7.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lentil imports amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 75%. India (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) dominates imports structure, together committing 75% of total imports. Pakistan (X tons) held a 9.6% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Sri Lanka (8.8%) and Nepal (5.7%).
