Exports by Country
India was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 59% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), generating a 41% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Pakistan (with a CAGR of +61.1%).
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest lignite supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Pakistan ($X), with a 6.4% share of total exports.

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -32% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 125%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Pakistan stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+19.3%).
Lignite Imports
Imports in Southern Asia
In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of lignites, when their volume decreased by -14.1% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 32,970%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, lignite imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 6,818% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Pakistan (X tons) represented the key importer of lignites, achieving 87% of total imports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), making up a 13% share of total imports.
Imports into Pakistan increased at an average annual rate of +52.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, India (+58.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +58.4% from 2012-2022. While the share of India (+4.2 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Pakistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lignites in Southern Asia, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 14% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Pakistan totaled +53.7%.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 434% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Pakistan totaled $X per ton.
