In 2021, imports of maize (corn) starch in Southern Asia rose significantly to X tons, with an increase of 9.9% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, maize starch imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In value terms, Bangladesh ($X), Sri Lanka ($X) and India ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 72% of total imports. Nepal, Afghanistan and Pakistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Nepal, with a CAGR of +47.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Afghanistan (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
