Maize Market Size in Southern Asia
The South Asian maize market skyrocketed to $X in 2022, increasing by 35% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a pronounced expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Maize Production in Southern Asia
In value terms, maize production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 325%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
India (X tons) remains the largest maize producing country in Southern Asia, accounting for 73% of total volume. Moreover, maize production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Pakistan (X tons), fourfold. Bangladesh (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 5.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in India amounted to +20.6%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Pakistan (+3.5% per year) and Bangladesh (+0.5% per year).
Maize Exports
Exports in Southern Asia
In 2022, approx. X tons of maize (green) were exported in Southern Asia; shrinking by -24% against 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 828%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, maize exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 817% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, India (X tons) represented the key exporter of maize (green), committing 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), creating a 17% share of total exports. The following exporters - Bangladesh (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons) - each resulted at a 6.8% share of total exports.
Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bangladesh (+46.5%), Sri Lanka (+11.4%) and Pakistan (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +46.5% from 2012-2022. India (+76 p.p.) and Bangladesh (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Sri Lanka and Pakistan saw its share reduced by -4.3% and -74.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest maize supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sri Lanka ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Pakistan, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in India stood at +2.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sri Lanka (+12.1% per year) and Pakistan (+3.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 8.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Maize Imports
Imports in Southern Asia
In 2022, approx. X tons of maize (green) were imported in Southern Asia; with a decrease of -20.3% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 502% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, maize imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a mild expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 247% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Nepal (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together making up 93% of total imports. The following importers - Maldives (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) - together made up 5.8% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +64.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest maize importing markets in Southern Asia were Afghanistan ($X), Maldives ($X) and Nepal ($X), with a combined 95% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Bangladesh, which accounted for a further 2.9%.
Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +55.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 39%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nepal (-2.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
