Mate Market Size in Southern Asia
In 2022, the South Asian mate market increased by 1.2% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption continues to indicate a resilient increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Mate Production in Southern Asia

Exports in Southern Asia
In 2022, shipments abroad of mate was finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 45%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mate exports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Afghanistan dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2022. Sri Lanka (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mate exports from Afghanistan stood at -18.3%. At the same time, Sri Lanka (+25.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sri Lanka emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +25.9% from 2012-2022. While the share of Sri Lanka (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Afghanistan (-2.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Afghanistan ($X) remains the largest mate supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 5.2% share of total exports.
In Afghanistan, mate exports shrank by an average annual rate of -15.9% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -4.5% against the previous year. Export price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mate export price decreased by -13.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Afghanistan totaled $X per ton.

Imports in Southern Asia
In 2022, purchases abroad of mate was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 250% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mate imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 313% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Bhutan (X tons) represented the largest importer of mate, mixing up 53% of total imports. Bangladesh (X tons) took a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Nepal (16%) and India (6.3%).
Bhutan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mate imports, with a CAGR of +52.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bangladesh (+13.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Nepal (-1.8%) and India (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Bhutan (+51 p.p.) and Bangladesh (+7.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while India and Nepal saw its share reduced by -12.7% and -28.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, the largest mate importing markets in Southern Asia were Bhutan ($X), India ($X) and Bangladesh ($X), with a combined 84% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Bhutan, with a CAGR of +56.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 71%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Bhutan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+16.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
