In 2022, supplies from abroad of goat meat decreased by -75% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 231% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, goat meat imports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 228% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Sri Lanka prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 87% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), making up a 6.9% share of total imports. The following importers - Bhutan (X tons) and Nepal (X tons) - together made up 5% of total imports.
Sri Lanka experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of goat meat. At the same time, India (+20.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +20.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Bhutan (-8.9%) and Nepal (-16.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Sri Lanka and India increased by +40 and +6.2 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Sri Lanka ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported goat meat in Southern Asia, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 4.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Bhutan, with a 3.8% share.
In Sri Lanka, goat meat imports declined by an average annual rate of -6.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+10.0% per year) and Bhutan (-10.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -30.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 53%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton.
