The South Asian market for meat of camels and other animals amounted to $X in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. India (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of camel and other animal meat production, accounting for 76% of total volume. Moreover, camel and other animal meat production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Pakistan (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Bangladesh (X tons), with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in India was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (-0.2% per year) and Bangladesh (+0.7% per year).

The average camel and other animal meat yield fell modestly to X tons per head in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the yield increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per head; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In 2022, the number of animals slaughtered for camel and other animal meat production in Southern Asia fell modestly to X heads, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year's figure. Overall, the number of producing animals continues to indicate a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 1.6% against the previous year. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, producing animals remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of meat of camels and other animals decreased by -1.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 525% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, camel and other animal meat exports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 473%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Pakistan was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 80% of total exports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), achieving a 20% share of total exports.

Exports from Pakistan increased at an average annual rate of +19.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, India (+29.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +29.0% from 2012-2022. India (+9.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Pakistan saw its share reduced by -9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) and India ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022.

India, with a CAGR of +50.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 2.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Pakistan stood at $X per ton.

Over the period under review, imports showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 106%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, camel and other animal meat imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 173% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Maldives was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 67% of total imports. Afghanistan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by India (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 31% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to camel and other animal meat imports into Maldives stood at -2.1%. At the same time, India (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth.
