In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of mechanical wood pulp, when their volume decreased by -18% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 1,034% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mechanical wood pulp exports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 1,007% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

India represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 89% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nepal (X tons), achieving an 11% share of total exports.

Exports from India decreased at an average annual rate of -5.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nepal (+34.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nepal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +34.9% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of India and Nepal increased by +18 and +11 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest mechanical wood pulp supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nepal ($X), with a 1.2% share of total exports.

In India, mechanical wood pulp exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the period from 2012-2022.

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -5.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 150% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In 2022, purchases abroad of mechanical wood pulp decreased by -18.9% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 153% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, mechanical wood pulp imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 75%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Pakistan represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 82% of total imports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), achieving a 16% share of total imports. Bangladesh (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Pakistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mechanical wood pulp imports, with a CAGR of +13.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, India (+10.3%) and Bangladesh (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Pakistan (+8.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Bangladesh (-2.8 p.p.) and India (-3.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mechanical wood pulp in Southern Asia, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 13% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Pakistan amounted to +12.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+8.3% per year) and Bangladesh (-1.1% per year).
