The South Asian non-cane molasses market amounted to $X in 2022, increasing by 2.6% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. In 2022, shipments abroad of molasses (excluding cane molasses) decreased by -56.9% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports showed a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 152% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-cane molasses exports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded slight growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 102%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

India was the largest exporter of molasses (excluding cane molasses) in Southern Asia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 68% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons), together achieving a 31% share of total exports.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the molasses (excluding cane molasses) exports, with a CAGR of +12.1% from 2012 to 2022. Bangladesh (-1.4%) and Pakistan (-18.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+59 p.p.) and Bangladesh (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Pakistan (-56.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest non-cane molasses supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India amounted to +21.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bangladesh (+4.6% per year) and Pakistan (-12.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 89% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+8.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of molasses (excluding cane molasses) increased by 46% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 143% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-cane molasses imports declined sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 298% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Afghanistan (X tons) was the largest importer of molasses (excluding cane molasses), generating 68% of total imports. Bangladesh (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by India (X tons) and Bhutan (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 30% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-cane molasses imports into Afghanistan stood at -5.7%. At the same time, Bangladesh (+69.1%) and Bhutan (+25.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +69.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, India (-18.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Bhutan increased by +15, +7 and +5.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Afghanistan ($X), Bangladesh ($X) and Bhutan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 86% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +57.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -66.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 119% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.
