In 2022, the South Asian motor grader market increased by 18% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption saw prominent growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X units of motor graders and levellers were exported in Southern Asia; dropping by -24.6% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 151% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In value terms, motor grader exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 174% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

India represented the largest exporter of motor graders and levellers in Southern Asia, with the volume of exports amounting to X units, which was approx. 84% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Sri Lanka (X units), constituting a 14% share of total exports. Pakistan (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of +13.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Sri Lanka (+32.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sri Lanka emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +32.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Pakistan (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Sri Lanka (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of India (-2.1 p.p.) and Pakistan (-7.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest motor grader supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 4.5% share of total exports.

In India, motor grader exports increased at an average annual rate of +10.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sri Lanka (+29.8% per year) and Pakistan (-3.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 74% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per unit), while Sri Lanka ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, overseas purchases of motor graders and levellers increased by 2.8% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, imports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 172%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, motor grader imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 66%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

India prevails in imports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 78% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X units), achieving a 9.5% share of total imports. Nepal (X units), Sri Lanka (X units) and Bangladesh (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the motor graders and levellers imports, with a CAGR of +17.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nepal (+11.4%), Pakistan (+7.9%) and Bangladesh (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Sri Lanka experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. India (+25 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka saw its share reduced by -2.2%, -5.8% and -9.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported motor graders and levellers in Southern Asia, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 3.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Nepal, with a 3.2% share.

In India, motor grader imports increased at an average annual rate of +16.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bangladesh (+14.1% per year) and Nepal (+8.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2022, which is down by -8.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 110%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per unit), while Pakistan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
