Exports in Southern Asia

In 2022, shipments abroad of mushrooms and truffles increased by 4.7% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -33.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 136% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mushroom and truffle exports soared to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +38.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 188%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

India represented the largest exporter of mushrooms and truffles in Southern Asia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 48% of total exports in 2022. Pakistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 27% share, followed by Sri Lanka (21%). Bhutan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Bhutan (with a CAGR of +43.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Sri Lanka ($X), India ($X) and Pakistan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 93% share of total exports. Bhutan lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 5.6%.

Bhutan, with a CAGR of +15.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 29%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, overseas purchases of mushrooms and truffles increased by 138% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 298% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, mushroom and truffle imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 192%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Nepal was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 48% of total imports. Maldives (X tons) held a 26% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Bhutan (18%) and Afghanistan (4.7%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bhutan (with a CAGR of +52.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
