Dried Mushroom Market Size in Southern Asia

The South Asian dried mushroom market reached $X in 2022, with an increase of 7.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dried mushroom production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 160% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Southern Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of dried mushrooms and truffles decreased by -35.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Total exports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -46.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 131%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dried mushroom exports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 44%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

India represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 70% of total exports. Pakistan (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Nepal (5%). Afghanistan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to dried mushroom exports from India stood at +3.2%. At the same time, Afghanistan (+23.5%), Nepal (+13.0%) and Pakistan (+5.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Afghanistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +23.5% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of India, Pakistan, Nepal and Afghanistan increased by +11, +6.8, +3.3 and +3.3 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X), Pakistan ($X) and Afghanistan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 97% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Afghanistan, with a CAGR of +36.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 64%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($X per ton), while Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Afghanistan (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, approx. X tons of dried mushrooms and truffles were imported in Southern Asia; waning by -8.1% on the year before. In general, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 110%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, dried mushroom imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Pakistan prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 84% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), constituting a 9.7% share of total imports. Nepal (X tons) and Bhutan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to dried mushroom imports into Pakistan stood at +24.6%. At the same time, Nepal (+28.6%), Bhutan (+6.7%) and India (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nepal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +28.6% from 2012-2022. Pakistan (+44 p.p.) and Nepal (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Bhutan and India saw its share reduced by -2% and -18.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dried mushrooms and truffles in Southern Asia, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Nepal, with a 6.3% share.

In Pakistan, dried mushroom imports increased at an average annual rate of +20.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-0.3% per year) and Nepal (+23.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -31.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bhutan ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bhutan (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
