Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, non-wheat flour exports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

India prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), generating an 8.1% share of total exports. Sri Lanka (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 1,376% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-wheat flour imports fell to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 531%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Afghanistan (X tons), distantly followed by Nepal (X tons), Bhutan (X tons) and Maldives (X tons) represented the main importers of non-wheat flours, together mixing up 89% of total imports. Pakistan (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons) and India (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +16.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 80% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
