India prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), generating an 8.1% share of total exports. Sri Lanka (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Sri Lanka (+11.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sri Lanka emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +11.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Pakistan (-8.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of India and Sri Lanka increased by +8.8 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest non-wheat flour supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 6.4% share of total exports.

In India, non-wheat flour exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sri Lanka (+11.2% per year) and Pakistan (-8.0% per year).

In 2021, purchases abroad of non-wheat flours decreased by -18.2% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports recorded a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 1,376% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-wheat flour imports fell to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 531%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Afghanistan (X tons), distantly followed by Nepal (X tons), Bhutan (X tons) and Maldives (X tons) represented the main importers of non-wheat flours, together mixing up 89% of total imports. Pakistan (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons) and India (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +16.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Afghanistan ($X), Maldives ($X) and Nepal ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 75% of total imports.

Afghanistan, with a CAGR of +22.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate slight growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 80% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
