In 2021, approx. X tons of nuts (prepared or preserved) were exported in Southern Asia; picking up by 17% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports posted prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 214%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, nuts (prepared or preserved) exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 180%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
India represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 63% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Sri Lanka (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons), together committing a 33% share of total exports. Pakistan (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Pakistan (+24.6%) and Sri Lanka (+14.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +24.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Bangladesh (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Sri Lanka (+13 p.p.) and Pakistan (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Bangladesh saw its share reduced by -16.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest nuts (prepared or preserved) supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 29% share of total exports. It was followed by Pakistan, with a 3.9% share.
In India, nuts (prepared or preserved) exports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sri Lanka (+14.8% per year) and Pakistan (+31.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 21%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Southern Asia
In 2021, supplies from abroad of nuts (prepared or preserved) increased by 52% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 193% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, nuts (prepared or preserved) imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 143%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, India (X tons) represented the major importer of nuts (prepared or preserved), making up 48% of total imports. Afghanistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 24% share, followed by Nepal (8.2%), Pakistan (6.2%), Bangladesh (5.5%) and Maldives (5%). Sri Lanka (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to nuts (prepared or preserved) imports into India stood at +31.9%. At the same time, Afghanistan (+36.3%), Nepal (+28.1%), Pakistan (+24.9%), Bangladesh (+17.5%), Sri Lanka (+14.9%) and Maldives (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Afghanistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +36.3% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of India, Afghanistan and Nepal increased by +19, +13 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported nuts (prepared or preserved) in Southern Asia, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Afghanistan ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Nepal, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in India amounted to +33.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Afghanistan (+33.6% per year) and Nepal (+32.5% per year).
