The South Asian oat market expanded significantly to $X in 2022, growing by 11% against the previous year. In general, consumption enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Oat Production in Southern Asia

In value terms, oat production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 42%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Afghanistan (X tons) remains the largest oat producing country in Southern Asia, comprising approx. 99.9% of total volume.

Exports in Southern Asia

Oat exports soared to X tons in 2022, picking up by 206% against 2021 figures. In general, exports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 695% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, oat exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 465%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Afghanistan represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 81% of total exports. India (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Sri Lanka (X tons). All these countries together took near 18% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to oat exports from Afghanistan stood at +21.7%. At the same time, Sri Lanka (+50.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sri Lanka emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +50.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, India (-12.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Afghanistan (+81 p.p.) and Sri Lanka (+6.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while India saw its share reduced by -74.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Afghanistan ($X), Sri Lanka ($X) and India ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 99% share of total exports.

Sri Lanka, with a CAGR of +69.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -35.4% against the previous year. Export price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, oat export price increased by +27.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 97%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+13.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, the amount of oats imported in Southern Asia rose remarkably to X tons, with an increase of 6.6% on the previous year. In general, imports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 292% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, oat imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 209%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) was the largest importer of oats, achieving 75% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Sri Lanka (X tons), comprising a 22% share of total imports. Pakistan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to oat imports into India stood at +25.1%. At the same time, Sri Lanka (+90.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sri Lanka emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +90.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Pakistan (-9.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Sri Lanka (+21 p.p.) and India (+20 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Pakistan (-41 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported oats in Southern Asia, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 19% share of total imports.

In India, oat imports increased at an average annual rate of +26.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (+73.5% per year) and Pakistan (-14.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
