In 2022, onion and shallot exports in Southern Asia soared to X tons, with an increase of 18% against 2021. Total exports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +38.0% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 77%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last decade. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 108%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. India dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2022. Afghanistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 7.6% share, followed by Pakistan (5.4%).
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to onion and shallot exports from India stood at +3.4%. At the same time, Afghanistan (+16.1%) and Pakistan (+12.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Afghanistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +16.1% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in India amounted to +5.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Pakistan (+20.6% per year) and Afghanistan (+20.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -17.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Southern Asia
In 2022, the amount of onions and shallots imported in Southern Asia skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 33% compared with the year before. In general, imports showed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 97% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, onion and shallot imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 94%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Bangladesh (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons) were the main importers of onions and shallots in Southern Asia, together mixing up 72% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Sri Lanka (X tons) and Nepal (X tons), together mixing up a 25% share of total imports. Afghanistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +36.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Bangladesh ($X), Pakistan ($X) and Sri Lanka ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 91% of total imports.
Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +28.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -12.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 32% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
