Over the period under review, exports showed a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, exports of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing reduced slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 9.2% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

India prevails in sowing structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2022. Pakistan (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Imports in Southern Asia

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of seeds, fruit and spores used for sowing decreased by -10.1% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +90.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Bangladesh prevails in sowing structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 91% of total imports in 2022. India (X tons), Nepal (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to seed, fruit and spore used for sowing imports into Bangladesh stood at +9.7%. At the same time, Afghanistan (+24.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Afghanistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +24.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, India (-1.1%) and Nepal (-9.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Bangladesh (+22 p.p.) and Afghanistan (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of India (-3.9 p.p.) and Nepal (-9.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, India ($X), Bangladesh ($X) and Nepal ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 89% share of total imports.

India, with a CAGR of +12.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -14.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nepal (+13.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
