Papaya Market Size in Southern Asia
In 2022, after three years of decline, there was growth in the South Asian papaya market, when its value increased by 1% to $X. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Papaya Production in Southern Asia
In value terms, papaya production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +6.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
India (X tons) remains the largest papaya producing country in Southern Asia, accounting for 97% of total volume. It was followed by Bangladesh (X tons), with a 2.2% share of total production.
In India, papaya production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022.
In 2022, the average yield of papayas in Southern Asia amounted to X tons per ha, picking up by 2.5% on the previous year. In general, the yield, however, recorded a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 3%. Over the period under review, the papaya yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the amount of papayas exported in Southern Asia amounted to X tons, surging by 9.9% on the previous year. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +43.9% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, papaya exports soared to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Sri Lanka (X tons) represented the largest exporter of papayas, constituting 63% of total exports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), comprising a 37% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Sri Lanka (with a CAGR of +18.4%).
In value terms, Sri Lanka ($X) remains the largest papaya supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 29% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Sri Lanka amounted to +10.3%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 49% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while India totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (-0.1%).
Papaya Imports
Imports in Southern Asia
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of papayas increased by 17% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 81% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, papaya imports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 103%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Nepal was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 70% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Maldives (X tons), constituting a 23% share of total imports. India (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into Nepal increased at an average annual rate of +20.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, India (+42.5%), Bangladesh (+12.9%) and Maldives (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +42.5% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nepal and India increased by +29 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nepal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported papayas in Southern Asia, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Maldives ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 3.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nepal totaled +28.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Maldives (+4.6% per year) and India (+53.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -15.7% against the previous year. Import price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, papaya import price increased by +8.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nepal ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+7.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
