Exports in Southern Asia
In 2022, approx. X tons of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) were exported in Southern Asia; which is down by -3.3% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 134%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paper and paperboard exports reached $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 138%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
In 2022, India (X tons) represented the main exporter of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated), committing 81% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), committing an 18% share of total exports.
Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of +14.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Pakistan (+55.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +55.9% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Pakistan increased by +17 percentage points.
In value terms, India ($X) and Pakistan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022.
Pakistan, with a CAGR of +53.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 16% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 46% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while India stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (-1.4%).

Imports in Southern Asia
In 2022, paper and paperboard imports in Southern Asia declined markedly to X tons, which is down by -28.1% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined sharply in the following year.
In value terms, paper and paperboard imports stood at $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 102%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
India represented the key importer of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 82% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), making up an 11% share of total imports. Bangladesh (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to paper and paperboard imports into India stood at +2.0%. At the same time, Pakistan (+8.3%) and Bangladesh (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +8.3% from 2012-2022. India (+8.3 p.p.) and Pakistan (+5.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) in Southern Asia, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 12% share of total imports.
In India, paper and paperboard imports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Pakistan (+16.8% per year) and Bangladesh (+16.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 40% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paper and paperboard import price increased by +116.1% against 2016 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+13.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
