The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The shipments of the one major exporters of pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks, namely India, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks exports, with a CAGR of -4.0% from 2012 to 2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of India increased by +1.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) also remains the largest drawing chalk supplier in Southern Asia.

In India, drawing chalk exports shrank by an average annual rate of -7.7% over the period from 2012-2021.

In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -16.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for India.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for India amounted to -3.8% per year.

In 2021, purchases abroad of pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks decreased by -15.1% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 105%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, drawing chalk imports shrank modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 65% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

India represented the major importer of pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was approx. 70% of total imports in 2021. Bangladesh (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Pakistan (6.1%). Sri Lanka (X units), Afghanistan (X units) and Nepal (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to drawing chalk imports into India stood at -5.3%. At the same time, Sri Lanka (+12.1%), Bangladesh (+9.9%) and Afghanistan (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sri Lanka emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +12.1% from 2012-2021. Pakistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Nepal (-16.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Bangladesh (+8.8 p.p.), Sri Lanka (+3.1 p.p.), Afghanistan (+1.9 p.p.) and Pakistan (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Nepal and India saw its share reduced by -7.4% and -8.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks in Southern Asia, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Pakistan, with an 11% share.

In India, drawing chalk imports plunged by an average annual rate of -9.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bangladesh (+16.0% per year) and Pakistan (+1.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per unit, rising by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per unit), while Afghanistan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
