In 2021, the amount of peas (dry) exported in Southern Asia soared to X tons, surging by 210% on 2020. In general, exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 285%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, dry peas exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 183% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

India prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 97% of total exports in 2021. Afghanistan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the peas (dry) exports, with a CAGR of +59.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Afghanistan (+9.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of India increased by +90 percentage points.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest dry peas supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Afghanistan ($X), with a 3.6% share of total exports.

In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -17.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($X per ton), while India amounted to $X per ton.

In 2021, approx. X tons of peas (dry) were imported in Southern Asia; increasing by 7.7% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Pakistan (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) were the main importers of peas (dry) in Southern Asia, together recording near 78% of total imports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons) and Nepal (X tons), together mixing up an 18% share of total imports. The following importers - Sri Lanka (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons) - each accounted for a 3.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Nepal (with a CAGR of +30.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Pakistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported peas (dry) in Southern Asia, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Pakistan amounted to +15.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bangladesh (+7.2% per year) and India (-23.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 31% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nepal (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
