Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a mild increase. India (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Nepal (X units). All these countries together held near 38% share of total imports. Maldives (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Bangladesh increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Maldives (+40.3%), Nepal (+20.6%) and India (+16.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Maldives emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +40.3% from 2012-2021. India (+14 p.p.), Nepal (+13 p.p.) and Maldives (+3.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Bangladesh saw its share reduced by -13.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest pile-driver importing markets in Southern Asia were India ($X), Bangladesh ($X) and Nepal ($X), with a combined 95% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Maldives, which accounted for a further 3.2%.

Maldives, with a CAGR of +78.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 27% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was India ($X per unit), while Nepal ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Maldives (+30.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
