Pineapple Market Size in Southern Asia
The South Asian pineapple market expanded to $X in 2022, with an increase of 3.2% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Pineapple Production in Southern Asia
In value terms, pineapple production expanded markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 33% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
India (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of pineapple production, comprising approx. 86% of total volume. Moreover, pineapple production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Bangladesh (X tons), eightfold.
In India, pineapple production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bangladesh (+1.6% per year) and Sri Lanka (-0.2% per year).
The average pineapple yield fell to X tons per ha in 2022, almost unchanged from the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the pineapple yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the pineapple harvested area in Southern Asia was estimated at X ha, approximately reflecting the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 4.4%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the pineapple harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Southern Asia
In 2022, approx. X tons of pineapples were exported in Southern Asia; waning by -8% against 2021. Total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +56.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 70% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, pineapple exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 99% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, India (X tons) was the major exporter of pineapples, comprising 90% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Sri Lanka (X tons), mixing up a 10% share of total exports.
India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pineapples exports, with a CAGR of +7.6% from 2012 to 2022. Sri Lanka (-12.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+37 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Sri Lanka (-37.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest pineapple supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.
In India, pineapple exports expanded at an average annual rate of +11.6% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while India amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+3.7%).
Pineapple Imports
Imports in Southern Asia
In 2022, the amount of pineapples imported in Southern Asia shrank modestly to X tons, waning by -2.2% compared with 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 201%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, pineapple imports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 326% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Maldives was the main importer of pineapples in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 48% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Afghanistan (X tons), India (X tons) and Bhutan (X tons), together comprising a 45% share of total imports. Pakistan (X tons) and Nepal (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +44.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest pineapple importing markets in Southern Asia were Maldives ($X), Afghanistan ($X) and India ($X), with a combined 92% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Afghanistan, with a CAGR of +41.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 10% against the previous year. Import price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pineapple import price decreased by -15.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 41%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($X per ton), while Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
