Pistachio Market Size in Southern Asia

The South Asian pistachio market totaled $X in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate strong growth. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Pistachio Production in Southern Asia

In value terms, pistachio production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +2.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 40%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Afghanistan (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of pistachio production, comprising approx. 89% of total volume. Moreover, pistachio production in Afghanistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Pakistan (X tons), eightfold.

In Afghanistan, pistachio production increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012-2022.

In 2022, the average pistachio yield in Southern Asia dropped notably to X tons per ha, falling by -21% against the previous year's figure. Exports in Southern Asia

In 2022, pistachio exports in Southern Asia dropped markedly to X tons, which is down by -40.5% against the previous year. In general, exports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 103%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pistachio exports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 186%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of pistachios, namely Afghanistan, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Afghanistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pistachios exports, with a CAGR of +12.9% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Afghanistan (+12 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Afghanistan ($X) also remains the largest pistachio supplier in Southern Asia.

In Afghanistan, pistachio exports expanded at an average annual rate of +18.9% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pistachio export price increased by +24.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Afghanistan.

Imports in Southern Asia

Pistachio imports totaled X tons in 2022, surging by 10% against 2021 figures. In general, imports recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, pistachio imports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

India was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 65% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), constituting a 34% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Pakistan (with a CAGR of +41.8%).

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pistachios in Southern Asia, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 22% share of total imports.
