Potato Market Size in Southern Asia

In 2021, the South Asian potato market decreased by -6.1% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The country with the largest volume of potato production was India (X tons), accounting for 73% of total volume. Potato exports surged to X tons in 2021, increasing by 33% compared with 2020. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -21.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Pakistan (X tons) and India (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together achieving 91% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Bangladesh (X tons), mixing up a 7.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +13.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X), India ($X) and Bangladesh ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 98% of total exports.

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -5% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 34%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas purchases of potatoes were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, potato imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +41.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 41%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nepal was the major importer of potatoes in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 56% of total imports in 2021. Afghanistan (X tons) took a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Sri Lanka (17%). Pakistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Nepal increased at an average annual rate of +9.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Pakistan (+14.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +14.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Sri Lanka (-1.4%) and Afghanistan (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nepal (+26 p.p.) and Pakistan (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Sri Lanka and Afghanistan saw its share reduced by -7.3% and -18.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Nepal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported potatoes in Southern Asia, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Afghanistan ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with a 19% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nepal amounted to +12.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Afghanistan (-8.1% per year) and Sri Lanka (+1.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 48%.
