Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, prepared baking powder imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. Bangladesh represented the main importer of prepared baking powders in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 60% of total imports in 2022. Nepal (X tons) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Pakistan (8.4%) and Maldives (8.3%). Bhutan (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Bangladesh was also the fastest-growing in terms of the prepared baking powders imports, with a CAGR of +21.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nepal (+10.8%), Bhutan (+9.0%), Pakistan (+7.4%) and Maldives (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Afghanistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Bangladesh (+30 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Nepal (-4.8 p.p.), Afghanistan (-5.3 p.p.), Pakistan (-6.3 p.p.) and Maldives (-8.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported prepared baking powders in Southern Asia, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Maldives, with an 8.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Bangladesh amounted to +34.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Pakistan (+8.7% per year) and Maldives (+6.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 27%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while Bhutan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+10.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
