Total exports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -2.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 107%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, preserved swine meat exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 172%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Sri Lanka dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), creating a 6.3% share of total exports.
Sri Lanka was also the fastest-growing in terms of the prepared or preserved hams and cuts of swine meat exports, with a CAGR of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021. India (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Sri Lanka (+3.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while India saw its share reduced by -3.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Sri Lanka ($X) remains the largest preserved swine meat supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 2% share of total exports.
In Sri Lanka, preserved swine meat exports increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2012-2021.

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 117% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 60%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, preserved swine meat imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 76%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
India represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 68% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Afghanistan (X tons), comprising a 24% share of total imports. The following importers - Bhutan (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons) and Maldives (X tons) - together made up 6.2% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved swine meat imports into India stood at -8.6%. At the same time, Sri Lanka (+34.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sri Lanka emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +34.2% from 2012-2021. Bhutan and Afghanistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Maldives (-24.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Afghanistan (+12 p.p.) and Sri Lanka (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while India and Maldives saw its share reduced by -7.1% and -8.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported prepared or preserved hams and cuts of swine meat in Southern Asia, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Afghanistan ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Maldives, with a 4.5% share.
In India, preserved swine meat imports shrank by an average annual rate of -7.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Afghanistan (+2.0% per year) and Maldives (-16.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -6.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 33%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while Sri Lanka ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Maldives (+11.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
