Canned Food Market Size in Southern Asia

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was decline in the South Asian canned food market, when its value decreased by -0.2% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, posted a resilient expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, canned food production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 48%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in Southern Asia

In 2021, approx. X tons of canned food were exported in Southern Asia; approximately equating 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 17%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, canned food exports shrank to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 17%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

India dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), committing a 7% share of total exports. Sri Lanka (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from India decreased at an average annual rate of -1.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Pakistan (+9.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +9.2% from 2012-2021. Sri Lanka experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Pakistan increased by +4.1 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest canned food supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 7.9% share of total exports.

In India, canned food exports increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (+3.1% per year) and Sri Lanka (+1.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -3.5% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of canned food were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -25.4% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, canned food imports dropped slightly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -17.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Pakistan represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 37% of total imports. Bangladesh (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by India (X tons), Maldives (X tons), Afghanistan (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 59% share of total imports. Nepal (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +13.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported canned food in Southern Asia, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 14% share.

In Pakistan, canned food imports increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bangladesh (+6.9% per year) and India (+13.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -9.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 16%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.
