Exports in Southern Asia

In 2022, the amount of primary cells and batteries exported in Southern Asia fell to X units, declining by -7.2% compared with the year before. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 81%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, primary cell and battery exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 106% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

India dominates exports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 96% of total exports in 2022. Bangladesh (X units) took a little share of total exports.

India experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of primary cells and batteries. At the same time, Bangladesh (+20.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +20.7% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Bangladesh increased by +3.4 percentage points.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest primary cell and battery supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 4.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India stood at +6.4%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 43% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 53%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per unit), while India totaled $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+5.8%).

In 2022, supplies from abroad of primary cells and batteries increased by 29% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +89.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, primary cell and battery imports reached $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 51% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

India prevails in imports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 85% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Nepal (X units), mixing up a 4.6% share of total imports. The following importers - Sri Lanka (X units), Afghanistan (X units), Pakistan (X units) and Bangladesh (X units) - together made up 9.4% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to primary cell and battery imports into India stood at +3.1%. At the same time, Bangladesh (+43.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +43.9% from 2012-2022. Nepal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Sri Lanka (-3.8%), Afghanistan (-6.8%) and Pakistan (-10.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+11 p.p.) and Bangladesh (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Pakistan saw its share reduced by -2.5%, -3.3% and -5.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported primary cells and batteries in Southern Asia, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Pakistan ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with a 5.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in India amounted to -9.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Pakistan (+3.1% per year) and Sri Lanka (+1.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2022, waning by -13.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 40%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per unit), while Nepal ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+15.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
