In 2021, India (X tons) represented the largest exporter of quinoa in Southern Asia, generating 100% of total export.

For the third consecutive year, Southern Asia recorded growth in purchases abroad of quinoa, which increased by 0.7% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 15,119% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, quinoa imports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 2,421%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Sri Lanka (X tons) represented the largest importer of quinoa, making up 77% of total imports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons) and Nepal (X tons), together generating a 19% share of total imports. Maldives (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Sri Lanka was also the fastest-growing in terms of the quinoa imports, with a CAGR of +216.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nepal (+111.7%), Maldives (+63.0%) and India (+9.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Sri Lanka (+77 p.p.), India (+14 p.p.) and Nepal (+4.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Maldives (-96.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest quinoa importing markets in Southern Asia were Maldives ($X), Sri Lanka ($X) and Nepal ($X), together accounting for 91% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Sri Lanka, with a CAGR of +227.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 1.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a dramatic contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 122%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while Sri Lanka ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nepal (+9.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
