India (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of cows skin production, accounting for 57% of total volume. Moreover, cows skin production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Pakistan (X tons), threefold. Bangladesh (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 17% share.
In India, cows skin production expanded at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (-2.4% per year) and Bangladesh (-1.3% per year).

Exports in Southern Asia
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of raw hides and skins of bovine animals decreased by -37.7% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a pronounced increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 519% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cows skin exports stood at $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 297% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Bangladesh (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons) represented roughly 65% of total exports in 2021. Nepal (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by India (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 33% share of total exports. Sri Lanka (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +23.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest cows skin supplying countries in Southern Asia were Bangladesh ($X), India ($X) and Afghanistan ($X), with a combined 88% share of total exports.
Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +29.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 62% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 78% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Southern Asia
In 2021, purchases abroad of raw hides and skins of bovine animals increased by 20% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cows skin imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
India dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 92% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Bangladesh (X tons), generating a 7.5% share of total imports.
Imports into India decreased at an average annual rate of -5.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bangladesh (+39.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +39.3% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Bangladesh increased by +7.2 percentage points.
In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported raw hides and skins of bovine animals in Southern Asia, comprising 98% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with a 1.5% share of total imports.
In India, cows skin imports declined by an average annual rate of -15.1% over the period from 2012-2021.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
