The South Asian coniferous roundwood market declined to $X in 2022, waning by -6.6% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports in Southern Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of roundwood (coniferous) increased by 80% to X cubic meters, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 181% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X cubic meters. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coniferous roundwood exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 153% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

India was the key exporter of roundwood (coniferous) in Southern Asia, with the volume of exports recording X cubic meters, which was near 73% of total exports in 2022. Afghanistan (X cubic meters) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Sri Lanka (11%).

Exports from India decreased at an average annual rate of -10.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Sri Lanka (+22.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sri Lanka emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +22.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Afghanistan (-15.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Afghanistan (+16 p.p.) and Sri Lanka (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of India (-26.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest coniferous roundwood supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Afghanistan ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in India stood at -4.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Afghanistan (-10.7% per year) and Sri Lanka (+28.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per cubic meter, surging by 9% against the previous year. Export price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, coniferous roundwood export price increased by +38.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 36%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per cubic meter), while Afghanistan ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, approx. X cubic meters of roundwood (coniferous) were imported in Southern Asia; with a decrease of -23.1% compared with 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 323% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, coniferous roundwood imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 288% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

India dominates imports structure, amounting to X cubic meters, which was approx. 96% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Pakistan (X cubic meters) and Bangladesh (X cubic meters) - each reached a 3.8% share of total imports.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the roundwood (coniferous) imports, with a CAGR of +58.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Pakistan (+32.3%) and Bangladesh (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of India increased by +51 percentage points.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported roundwood (coniferous) in Southern Asia, comprising 97% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Pakistan ($X), with a 1.5% share of total imports.
