The South Asian market for salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal shrank modestly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -4.2% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +4.5% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, production of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +5.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 34%. Over the period under review, production of reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports of Salted, Dried or Smoked Meat, and Offal
Exports in Southern Asia
In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal, when their volume decreased by -8.1% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 175%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, exports of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 255%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then plummeted in the following year.
Exports by Country
Pakistan dominates offal structure, recording X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2022. Bangladesh (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Pakistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal exports, with a CAGR of +50.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bangladesh (+5.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Pakistan increased by +96 percentage points.
In value terms, Pakistan ($X) remains the largest salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with a 7.4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Pakistan stood at +64.8%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -8.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 39%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while Pakistan amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+9.5%).
Imports of Salted, Dried or Smoked Meat, and Offal
Imports in Southern Asia
In 2022, the amount of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal imported in Southern Asia shrank to X tons, with a decrease of -8.9% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 134% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, imports of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal dropped sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 70%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Bangladesh was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 54% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Maldives (X tons), India (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons), together comprising a 43% share of total imports. Pakistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Bangladesh was also the fastest-growing in terms of the salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal imports, with a CAGR of +24.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Pakistan (+5.3%) and Maldives (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. India experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Afghanistan (-16.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Bangladesh, Maldives and India increased by +48, +4 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Bangladesh ($X), India ($X) and Maldives ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 84% of total imports.
Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +29.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
