In 2022, the South Asian sesame seed market decreased by -7.3% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of sesame seed, when their volume decreased by -19.1% to X tons. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, sesame seed exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

India was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), comprising a 27% share of total exports. The following exporters - Bangladesh (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons) - together made up 6.1% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sesame seed exports from India stood at -3.3%. At the same time, Pakistan (+15.9%), Sri Lanka (+14.0%) and Bangladesh (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +15.9% from 2012-2022. Pakistan (+21 p.p.) and Sri Lanka (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while India saw its share reduced by -21.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest sesame seed supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with a 2.5% share.

In India, sesame seed exports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Pakistan (+16.8% per year) and Bangladesh (+5.6% per year).

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of sesame seed decreased by -7.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 611%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sesame seed imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 800% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

India prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 87% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Nepal (X tons), mixing up a 9.1% share of total imports. Bangladesh (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into India increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bangladesh (+67.7%) and Nepal (+11.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +67.7% from 2012-2022. While the share of Bangladesh (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of India (-4.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sesame seed in Southern Asia, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nepal ($X), with a 6% share of total imports.
