In value terms, sewing thread exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
Bangladesh was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons), together creating a 20% share of total exports. Nepal (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
Exports from Bangladesh increased at an average annual rate of +15.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nepal (+22.5%) and Sri Lanka (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nepal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +22.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, India (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Bangladesh and Nepal increased by +41 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) remains the largest sewing thread supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with a 7.8% share.
In Bangladesh, sewing thread exports expanded at an average annual rate of +10.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (-1.1% per year) and Sri Lanka (+3.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 10% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Southern Asia
In 2022, approx. X tons of sewing thread of man-made filaments or staple fibers were imported in Southern Asia; with a decrease of -13.9% against 2021. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 54% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sewing thread imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 69%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Bangladesh represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 61% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons) and India (X tons), together making up a 34% share of total imports. The following importers - Sri Lanka (X tons) and Nepal (X tons) - together made up 4.2% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sewing thread imports into Bangladesh stood at +8.9%. At the same time, Nepal (+10.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nepal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +10.3% from 2012-2022. Pakistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Sri Lanka (-8.0%) and India (-16.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Bangladesh (+37 p.p.) and Pakistan (+3.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Sri Lanka and India saw its share reduced by -2.8% and -39.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sewing thread of man-made filaments or staple fibers in Southern Asia, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Pakistan ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 16% share.
In Bangladesh, sewing thread imports increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (+0.6% per year) and India (-13.5% per year).
