Bangladesh was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons), together creating a 20% share of total exports. Nepal (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Bangladesh increased at an average annual rate of +15.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nepal (+22.5%) and Sri Lanka (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nepal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +22.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, India (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Bangladesh and Nepal increased by +41 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) remains the largest sewing thread supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with a 7.8% share.

In Bangladesh, sewing thread exports expanded at an average annual rate of +10.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (-1.1% per year) and Sri Lanka (+3.6% per year).

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 4.8% against the previous year. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 54% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sewing thread imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 69%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
