The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

In 2021, the amount of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste exported in Southern Asia expanded remarkably to X tons, increasing by 12% compared with the previous year. In general, exports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 82% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, silk yarn exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, India (X tons) was the key exporter of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste in Southern Asia, constituting 99% of total export.
India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste exports, with a CAGR of +8.4% from 2012 to 2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of India increased by +3.3 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2021, purchases abroad of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, faced a deep reduction. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, silk yarn imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Pakistan was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 45% of total imports. India (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 28% share, followed by Nepal (20%). The following importers - Afghanistan (X tons), Bhutan (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons) - each accounted for a 6% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +31.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste in Southern Asia, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nepal ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Pakistan, with an 18% share.
In India, silk yarn imports contracted by an average annual rate of -5.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Nepal (-0.8% per year) and Pakistan (-14.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 6.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, silk yarn import price increased by +93.4% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 46%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bhutan (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
