Sorghum Market Size in Southern Asia

Sorghum exports dropped remarkably to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -29.1% on 2021. In general, exports recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 360% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sorghum exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 180%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

India prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 98% of total exports in 2022. Afghanistan (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sorghum exports, with a CAGR of -12.3% from 2012 to 2022. Afghanistan (-39.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Afghanistan increased by +2.3 percentage points.

From 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($X per ton), while India stood at $X per ton.

Imports in Southern Asia

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of sorghum decreased by -12.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 1,604% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sorghum imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 1,338% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Bangladesh represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 58% of total imports. Pakistan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Afghanistan (X tons). All these countries together took near 42% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Pakistan (with a CAGR of +23.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sorghum in Southern Asia, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Pakistan ($X), with a 28% share of total imports.

In Bangladesh, sorghum imports increased at an average annual rate of +19.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (+19.3% per year) and Afghanistan (+40.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Import price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sorghum import price decreased by -10.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 67%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Afghanistan (+26.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
