Strawberry Market Size in Southern Asia

In 2022, the South Asian strawberry market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption showed resilient growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Strawberry Production in Southern Asia

In value terms, strawberry production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Sri Lanka (X tons), Afghanistan (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons), together comprising 90% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +29.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Strawberry Exports

Exports in Southern Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of strawberries increased by 10% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 82%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, strawberry exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 298%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Sri Lanka represented the major exporter of strawberries in Southern Asia, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 60% of total exports in 2022. Afghanistan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by India (X tons). All these countries together took near 38% share of total exports.

Exports from Sri Lanka decreased at an average annual rate of -2.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Afghanistan (+38.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Afghanistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +38.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, India (-14.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Afghanistan (+27 p.p.) and Sri Lanka (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while India saw its share reduced by -29.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Sri Lanka ($X) remains the largest strawberry supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Afghanistan ($X), with a 5.7% share of total exports.

In Sri Lanka, strawberry exports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Afghanistan (+31.7% per year) and India (-8.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 170%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+8.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of strawberries increased by 33% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports showed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 591%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, strawberry imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 498% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Maldives (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons) represented roughly 77% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by India (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons), together comprising a 21% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +30.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest strawberry importing markets in Southern Asia were Maldives ($X), Afghanistan ($X) and India ($X), together comprising 97% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Afghanistan, with a CAGR of +39.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
