The South Asian concrete tile market fell to $X in 2022, shrinking by -4.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Over the period under review, exports showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 118% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, concrete tile exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 149%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, India (X tons) was the key exporter of tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone in Southern Asia, mixing up 99% of total export.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone exports, with a CAGR of +32.7% from 2012 to 2022. India (+23 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2022, the amount of tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone imported in Southern Asia shrank to X tons, dropping by -5.9% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 93%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, concrete tile imports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed slight growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Maldives was the main importer of tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 51% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), Pakistan (X tons), Bhutan (X tons) and Nepal (X tons), together generating a 42% share of total imports. Afghanistan (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to concrete tile imports into Maldives stood at +13.1%. At the same time, Nepal (+37.5%), Pakistan (+16.3%) and India (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nepal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +37.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Bangladesh (-2.4%), Bhutan (-6.6%) and Afghanistan (-21.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Maldives (+36 p.p.), India (+7.2 p.p.), Pakistan (+6 p.p.) and Nepal (+5.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Bhutan and Afghanistan saw its share reduced by -6.8% and -40.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest concrete tile importing markets in Southern Asia were India ($X), Maldives ($X) and Pakistan ($X), with a combined 87% share of total imports. Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Afghanistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 8.1%.

Nepal, with a CAGR of +33.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -26.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, concrete tile import price increased by +59.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 40% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Bhutan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
