Toilet Paper Market Size in Southern Asia
The South Asian toilet paper market shrank slightly to $X in 2021, flattening at the previous year. The total consumption indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -6.2% against 2018 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, toilet paper production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 38%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Southern Asia
In 2021, approx. X tons of toilet paper were exported in Southern Asia; increasing by 25% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 175%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, toilet paper exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 143%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, India (X tons) represented the main exporter of toilet paper, making up 69% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), achieving a 27% share of total exports. Bangladesh (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from India decreased at an average annual rate of -15.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bangladesh (+66.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +66.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Sri Lanka (-6.0%) and Pakistan (-15.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Bangladesh (+3.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Pakistan and India saw its share reduced by -2% and -2.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest toilet paper supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with a 2.7% share.
In India, toilet paper exports decreased by an average annual rate of -13.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (-21.3% per year) and Bangladesh (+63.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -14.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 28%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Southern Asia
In 2021, supplies from abroad of toilet paper decreased by -36.2% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports saw a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 31%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, toilet paper imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the three major importers of toilet paper, namely Maldives, Afghanistan and India, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Bhutan (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Pakistan (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons) and Nepal (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 25% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +35.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Maldives ($X), India ($X) and Afghanistan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 65% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Pakistan, which together accounted for a further 30%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +47.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
