Tomato Market Size in Southern Asia

In 2022, the South Asian tomato market decreased by -0.9% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Tomato Production in Southern Asia

In value terms, tomato production expanded slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

India (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of tomato production, accounting for 94% of total volume. Moreover, tomato production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Pakistan (X tons), more than tenfold.

In India, tomato production increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (+1.9% per year) and Bangladesh (+5.4% per year).

The average tomato yield rose slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 5% on the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the yield increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of tomatoes were harvested in Southern Asia; waning by -6.6% against the year before. In general, the harvested area saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 15%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha, and then declined in the following year.

Exports in Southern Asia

For the third year in a row, Southern Asia recorded growth in shipments abroad of tomatoes, which increased by 2.4% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports showed a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 103%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tomato exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -12.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Afghanistan (X tons) and India (X tons) represented the main exporters of tomatoes in 2022, finishing at near 44% and 36% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), comprising a 20% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +29.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Afghanistan ($X) remains the largest tomato supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 27% share of total exports.

In Afghanistan, tomato exports increased at an average annual rate of +35.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (-8.9% per year) and Pakistan (+10.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -3.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 49%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, purchases abroad of tomatoes decreased by -19% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded pronounced growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, tomato imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Pakistan dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 92% of total imports in 2022. Bangladesh (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tomato imports into Pakistan stood at +2.7%. At the same time, Bangladesh (+44.9%) and Afghanistan (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +44.9% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Bangladesh increased by +4.1 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tomatoes in Southern Asia, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 21% share of total imports.

In Pakistan, tomato imports shrank by an average annual rate of -7.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bangladesh (+44.0% per year) and Afghanistan (+6.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 30%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
