The South Asian tomato puree market rose to $X in 2022, increasing by 3.3% against the previous year. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, tomato puree exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a prominent expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

India represented the main exporter of tomato puree and paste in Southern Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 71% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), creating a 25% share of total exports. The following exporters - Bhutan (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons) - each finished at a 3.7% share of total exports.

Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of +23.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bhutan (+76.8%) and Sri Lanka (+13.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bhutan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +76.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Pakistan (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+48 p.p.) and Bhutan (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Pakistan (-45.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest tomato puree supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 30% share of total exports. It was followed by Bhutan, with a 0.9% share.

In India, tomato puree exports increased at an average annual rate of +22.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (-3.4% per year) and Bhutan (+59.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while Bhutan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (-0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, tomato puree imports in Southern Asia reduced to X tons, falling by -10.7% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 172% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tomato puree imports rose modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 304% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons) were the main importers of tomato puree and paste in Southern Asia, together achieving 73% of total imports. Sri Lanka (X tons) took a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Bangladesh (6.9%) and Maldives (6.1%). The following importers - Afghanistan (X tons) and Nepal (X tons) - each finished at a 3.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Pakistan (with a CAGR of +22.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($X), Pakistan ($X) and Sri Lanka ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 85% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Pakistan, with a CAGR of +19.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 48%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Maldives ($X per ton) and India ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) and Afghanistan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
