Turkey Meat Market Size in Southern Asia

The South Asian turkey meat market skyrocketed to $X in 2022, with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a slight downturn. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, turkey meat production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports in Southern Asia

Turkey meat exports declined dramatically to X tons in 2022, which is down by -33.5% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, turkey meat exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

India represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 86% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), comprising a 13% share of total exports.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the turkey meat exports, with a CAGR of +4.4% from 2012 to 2022. Pakistan (-10.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+28 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Pakistan (-27.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest turkey meat supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 34%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while India totaled $X per ton.

Imports in Southern Asia

Turkey meat imports declined to X tons in 2022, dropping by -7% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, turkey meat imports reached $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Bhutan (X tons) represented the key importer of turkey meat, achieving 50% of total imports. Maldives (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Afghanistan (13%) and India (8.7%). The following importers - Sri Lanka (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons) - together made up 9.9% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to turkey meat imports into Bhutan stood at +12.2%. At the same time, Bangladesh (+21.7%), India (+14.5%), Pakistan (+12.7%), Maldives (+3.8%) and Sri Lanka (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +21.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Afghanistan (-14.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Bhutan (+33 p.p.), India (+6.4 p.p.), Maldives (+5.3 p.p.), Bangladesh (+2.6 p.p.) and Pakistan (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Afghanistan saw its share reduced by -50% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest turkey meat importing markets in Southern Asia were Bhutan ($X), Maldives ($X) and India ($X), together accounting for 73% of total imports. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +38.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 8.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while Sri Lanka ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
