The South Asian non-alloy steel u-section market declined slightly to $X in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-alloy steel u-section production reduced slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 21%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Southern Asia
In 2022, shipments abroad of u-sections of non-alloy steel decreased by -46.7% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 109% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, non-alloy steel u-section exports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 66%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
India prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2022. Pakistan (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the u-sections of non-alloy steel exports, with a CAGR of +6.3% from 2012 to 2022. Pakistan (-9.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+11 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Pakistan saw its share reduced by -10.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest non-alloy steel u-section supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 3.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in India stood at +6.4%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while India amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+3.6%).

Imports in Southern Asia
For the fourth consecutive year, Southern Asia recorded decline in purchases abroad of u-sections of non-alloy steel, which decreased by less than 0.1% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 318%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, non-alloy steel u-section imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate slight growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 299% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Nepal prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 71% of total imports in 2022. Bangladesh (X tons) took a 9.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by India (7.7%) and Sri Lanka (4.6%). Pakistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Nepal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the u-sections of non-alloy steel imports, with a CAGR of +23.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, India (+15.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Pakistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Bangladesh (-5.5%) and Sri Lanka (-13.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nepal and India increased by +61 and +5.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nepal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported u-sections of non-alloy steel in Southern Asia, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nepal stood at +19.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+14.3% per year) and Bangladesh (-2.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -6.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
