In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the South Asian wheat starch market, when its value decreased by -12.8% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.

In 2021, the amount of wheat starch exported in Southern Asia reduced remarkably to X tons, falling by -88.2% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 7,349% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 29% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw temperate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 54% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while India amounted to $X per ton.

Imports in Southern Asia

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of wheat starch increased by 30% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 82%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wheat starch imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 83%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

At the same time, Afghanistan (+48.9%) and Bangladesh (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth.
