Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 7,349% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wheat starch exports declined sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 6,991% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

India represented the major exporter of wheat starch in Southern Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 71% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), generating a 28% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wheat starch exports from India stood at +12.8%. At the same time, Pakistan (+13.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +13.4% from 2012-2021. While the share of India (+27 p.p.) and Pakistan (+11 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) and Pakistan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021.

Pakistan, with a CAGR of +20.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 29% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw temperate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 54% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while India amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+6.4%).

Imports in Southern Asia

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of wheat starch increased by 30% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 82%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wheat starch imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 83%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

India dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 86% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Afghanistan (X tons), comprising a 9.1% share of total imports. Bangladesh (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wheat starch imports into India stood at +17.8%. At the same time, Afghanistan (+48.9%) and Bangladesh (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Afghanistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +48.9% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Afghanistan and India increased by +8.1 and +7.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wheat starch in Southern Asia, comprising 84% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Afghanistan ($X), with a 9.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India stood at +14.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Afghanistan (+41.5% per year) and Bangladesh (+3.7% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable setback. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
