In 2022, the South Asian whey market decreased by -4.6% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Whey Production in Southern Asia
In value terms, whey production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 127% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Whey Exports
Exports in Southern Asia
In 2022, whey exports in Southern Asia skyrocketed to X tons, growing by 36% against the previous year. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 913% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, whey exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 1,748%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
India was the main exporter of whey in Southern Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 63% of total exports in 2022. Pakistan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Bangladesh (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 37% share of total exports.
India experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of whey. At the same time, Pakistan (+16.8%) and Sri Lanka (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +16.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Bangladesh (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Pakistan and India increased by +16 and +3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest whey supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 5.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Pakistan, with a 4.2% share.
In India, whey exports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sri Lanka (+8.8% per year) and Pakistan (+5.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 82% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Whey Imports
Imports in Southern Asia
In 2022, whey imports in Southern Asia reduced to X tons, waning by -12.2% on the year before. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -24.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, whey imports reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Pakistan (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) were the main importers of whey in 2022, finishing at approx. 43% and 32% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), creating an 18% share of total imports. The following importers - Sri Lanka (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons) - together made up 6.2% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +13.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest whey importing markets in Southern Asia were Pakistan ($X), India ($X) and Bangladesh ($X), together accounting for 94% of total imports. Sri Lanka and Afghanistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.4%.
Afghanistan, with a CAGR of +11.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 14% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 24%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
